About

WELCOME TO OUR PAGE!

We are third year MD/PhD students living in NYC. We started @ScopesandScrubs to share our experience in efforts to give exposure to MD/PhD programs and inspire others. We love what we do and wouldn’t be where we are without the help of our own mentors and the resource we were lucky to have. We recognize that a lot of people don’t have access to these resources and mentors (especially MD/PhD ones). Hence, you will find a lot of resources here as well as on our Instagram and Youtube!

Additionally, our goal is to make science/medicine fun. Our field is very elusive so that even the general public doesn’t know what different doctors do and what it means when you say you do research in a basic science lab.  We want to change this by exposing people to the medical/science fields through social media. Lastly, we want to create a space to encourage, support, and talk about science and medicine.

Lindsey

I am originally from Las Vegas, Nevada but have fallen in love with New York City after moving here for college. Fun fact, I am an identical twin and my sister (below) and I went to college together and are currently in an MD/PhD program together! I went to Columbia University and graduated in 2017 with a degree in Neuroscience. I applied straight out of undergraduate into dual degree MD/PhD programs. I have a wide range of research interests including stem cell biology, immunology, and neuroscience. I am currently studying bone stem cells in a bone lab an orthopedic surgery lab (a division of surgery that is involved with the repair of bones and muscles). I absolutely love what I study, it is so amazing to me that we have a pool of cells in our body that can regenerate other tissues and understanding how stem cells repopulate bone especially after injury and how we can understand these cells and then use this knowledge to modify/strengthen these cells in situations such as aging or disease when they are not working as well. In the future I would love to continue what I study now and run a lab and be a surgeon/physician scientist. Outside of the classroom and lab I love hanging out with friends and exploring the city for new museums and restaurants!

I am originally from Las Vegas, Nevada (just like Lindsey… Surprise!) and moved to NYC for college 5 years ago! I went to Columbia University and graduated in 2017 with a degree in Neuroscience. I always knew I wanted to be a doctor but after starting basic research as an undergraduate I knew I couldn’t stay away from the lab and decided to apply to MD/PhD programs to get the best of both worlds! For my PhD, I am researching neuronal innervation to the skin and the co-development of the two and how we can harness this information to regenerate fully functional skin. I also study mechanisms of increased pain sensation in inflammatory skin conditions. I plan to integrate my training in a future career as a physician-scientist. My absolute favorite neighborhood in the city is Soho. I love the art, architecture, and, of course, shopping!

Marisol

I am a Miami girl. I am 1/3 sisters born to Cuban and Argentinian parents. I am a first generation college graduate and a Worlds Ahead Scholar from FIU! I graduated with a degree in Biology and Chemistry in 2016 and took a research gap year. The complexity of the brain to control every aspect of humanity is one that has fascinated me ever since I was mature enough to understand my grandma’s mental deterioration as a result of Alzheimer’s disease. Since then I have been questioning human behaviors and neurological diseases. I wish to be a neurosurgeon and a neuroscientist. Currently for my PhD I am using basic neuroelectrophysiology methods developed in my lab and applying them to clinical diseases such as Alzheimer’s and epilepsy. When I am not hibernating in the library I am at the gym, playing sports, writing music, exploring the city, or dancing with my friends!
